Question: What is the connection between art and smoking.
I had begun to contemplate a rough draft of this subject in my head after stumbling upon a few pictures of some of my favorite beauties, and this chic pastime of leisure smoking. Even a nude of the gorgeous Gisele Bundchen, by Michel Comte was auctioned off at Christie’s for 98,000 sterling pounds. Then, when I saw a post of the collaboration of the great Marc Jacob and Kate Moss, my toilings were solidified.
Let me paint a picture.
Is it the cool allure of slender men and women leisurely puffing the delicious smelling golden tobacco that inspires us. I will admit that I am pleasantly attracted to the idea, smell, look, and provoking atmosphere of dashing debonair men standing in a room filled with old leather club chairs, books, fireplace, and the smoke of a cigars quite romantically appealing. Yes I know the health risks, and am all to familiar with the disease of cancer…But what is the connection between artists and this leisure activity. With contemplation, and my mind trying to make the connection between the prevalent crossings of these two worlds, I have come to my own conclusions.
Firstly, brilliant works of art usually never come from unruffled minds. And while it increases the heart rate, it also has a calming effect. I think that it might give the jitteriness of the overstimulated subconscious thought a chance to take a break and somewhat collect itself. Though I am not promoting this, only pointing out the connection, as I am continually flooded with creativity to the point where I just need to turn my streaming flow of activity off, I can see where the “need” for calm comes from.
Secondly it appeals to our desire for a sense of wreckless of a bad/good combination sex appeal. Just think of all the smoldering celebrities of yesteryear….all with the afore mentioned habit. I can say that the image of Claudia with her innocent kitten looks has a drawing.
Lastly, as I was researching some of the history, I found some perverse evidence of unsettling disturbances regarding the fight for the enjoyment of this habit, and was bound to conclude that smoking is one of those rebellious pleasures that is scrutinized and therefore lends itself to the way of free spirited individuals who just don’t give a damn. We all admire the quality of individuality, along with the right to choose ones own pleasures as long as we are responsible for ourselves, and the safety of others. Fashion is really just a lighthearted art of self expression. There are so many things that we all do that can cause health concerns, lets not sweat the small stuff.
All though I am not a smoker, I will admit that I am waiting for a special occasion to light up a cigar….
